Resources For Children

When Someone You Love Dies

When someone important in your life dies, like a parent, brother or sister, grandparent, or someone else you love, it can be really confusing and painful. You might feel lots of different emotions, and that is okay. Everyone’s grief is different, and there is no right or wrong way to feel.

This page is here just for you. We want to help you understand your feelings and share ideas and activities that might support you along the way. You are not alone.

Lionheart Grief Support for Children

At Lionheart, we offer special programs and resources to support children who are grieving. This includes our New Families Camp, where children just like you can connect, play, talk, and learn ways to cope with big feelings after someone they love has died.

You might also like to try some activities at home, look at our picture books, or talk to a grown-up you trust about how you are feeling.

Feelings You Might Have

Grief can feel like a big storm inside, sometimes quiet, sometimes loud. Here are some feelings you might notice:

  • Sadness: You might cry or feel like hiding away sometimes. That is normal.
  • Anger: You might feel cross or like things are unfair.
  • Confusion: Things might not make sense, and you may wonder why this happened.
  • Scared: You might feel worried about what will happen next.
  • Lonely: You might miss your Important Person and feel like no one understands.

Sometimes you will feel lots of feelings at once, or no feelings at all. Grief can change from day to day or even hour to hour. However you feel, your emotions are important.

You Are Not Alone

Many children feel like they are the only ones going through this. But you are not alone. Lots of kids have had someone special die, and there are people who care and want to help you feel safe and supported.

At Lionheart, we believe in sticking together. Whether it is through camp, talking with someone, reading stories, or doing creative activities, we are here to walk beside you.

Things That Might Help

We have gathered books, activity sheets, and videos made just for kids who are grieving. These can help you feel understood and remind you that it is okay to talk about your Important Person.

We Are Here for You

No matter how you feel today, tomorrow, or next week, Lionheart is here for you. You are brave, you are loved, and you are not alone.
