Lionheart’s Grief Counselling Service
COUNSELLING
Sometimes families just need a space to pause, ask questions, and understand what is happening for them after the death of an Important Person in their family.
Lionheart offers short-term counselling for children and families who are navigating life after the death of someone important.
Our approach is different to traditional ongoing therapy. Many families are not looking for long-term counselling for their children, they are looking for guidance, reassurance, and a chance to talk things through with someone who understands childhood grief.
In most cases, support may involve one to three sessions. These sessions give children and teens the opportunity to:
- Share how they are experiencing grief
- Better understand what is happening for them
- Learn practical ways to manage day-to-day challenges
- Feel reassured that there is no right or wrong way to grieve
Children and families can return for additional sessions over time, allowing for check-ins as needs change. This helps ensure support is available not just in the early stages, but throughout their grief journey.
All sessions are delivered by experienced Psychologists and Mental Health Accredited Social Workers who specialise in supporting grieving children and teens.
Eligibility
This service is available to children and families who:
- Have experienced the death of a parent, sibling, or significant caregiver
- Are already connected with a Lionheart program, such as a New Families Camp or Raw to Roar: Lionheart's Grief Pathway
Each child can access up to five free counselling sessions per year.
Sessions are offered in community-based locations across Perth, making it easier for families to access support close to home.

WHY COUNSELLING?
We know that not every child needs counselling.
In fact, with the right supports around them, most children do not need ongoing one-to-one counselling.
However, many families feel an expectation that they should access counselling, or are unsure what support is right for their child.
For some, it’s about reassurance, understanding what is normal, and knowing they are on the right track. For others, there may be more complex experiences or challenges that would benefit from extra support.
Whatever your family’s needs, our team is here to help you make sense of what’s going on and guide you toward the right support, at the right time.
